Oud Beersel is doing well !

European Beers Star 2015 For Oud Beersel

Golden medal

At the European Beers Star competition in Germany, one of the largest beer competitions in the world, stekerij (Lambic blender) Oud Beersel recently won the only gold medal  for a Belgian participant !

Nearly 2,000 beers from 45 countries participated in the competition, divided into no fewer than 55 categories. Host country Germany received 20 gold medals, our country only one, thanks to Oud Beersel Oude Kriek. Thus our Belgian (and Pajottenland’s!) honor was still saved.

New casks

Moreover, in early December 15 ‘new’ wooden casks of 60 hl and 120 hl from Italy were delivered and installed in the stekerij (Laarheidestraat 230 at  1650 Beersel).

Particular was that they all had to be installed on the 2nd floor. And that was not such a simple task as you can see in the pictures below.

The Lambic Award 2015 goes to ‘t Brugs Beertje

Lambic Award 2015

On Thursday 3 december 2015 the “Hoge Raad voor Ambachtelijke Lambiekbieren” (HORAL) handed out their fifth Lambic Award. This award is given to person that has distinguished themselves in a particular way in terms of defending the interests of the sector of the traditional lambic beers and promotion of Oude Geuze and Oude Kriek. This year Daisy Claeys, manageress of Café ‘t Brugs Beertje at Bruges, was chosen.

Lambic Award 2015

Café ’t Brugs Beertje opened its doors in the spring of 1983. In this cozy café, not far from the Bruges Belgry, no Pilsners are served. The menu features more than 300 artisanal top fermented and spontaneous fermented beers. Manageress Daisy Claeys herself calls them “craft beers of high desireablity” (note: in Dutch top fermented beers are called “bieren van hoge gisting”, Daisy calls the spontaneous fermented beers “bieren van hoge goesting”).

Previous editions

The first Lambik Award was awarded in 2011 to brewmaster Edgar Winderickx from Dworp. Second in line was honorary mayor of Beersel Hugo Casaer, followed in 2013 by the British beer writer Tim Webb. Last year the award went to Steve Isacsson of the Lambic beer restaurant Akkurat at Stockholm.

“It’s an honor,” commented Daisy. “At the time I opted not to give ordinary Pilsners, but the specialty beers. It feels good to get recognition for this choice.”

By the way, you can find ’t Brugs Beertje between the Market and “het Zand” in the Kemelstraat 5, a bystreet of the Steenstraat. It is open daily from 4 pm, except on Tuesday and Wednesday when it’s closed all day. During the week it is open until midnight and during the weekend until 1am. Golden Lambikstoemper Award 2015 won by …

Gouden Lambikstoemper 2015

… Streekproducten Centrum Halle!

Based on an impressive list of cafés and various criteria (that were drawn up after many hours of negotiations) and after anonymous visits to the proposed businesses we, the Lambikstoempers, reached out our 6th Golden Lambikstoemper Award on the 22th of november 2015, to a business that best promoted our beloved lambic beers in 2015.

The winner this year is Streekproducten Centrum (Poststraat 3A in 1500 Halle), because of their longstanding commitment to local beers and the Lambic beers in particular. Invariably they have all Old Gueuze and Old Kriek of the 12 remaining lambic breweries and “stekerijen” in their shop. Definitely worth a visit!

1 winner!

Normally we use a top three in our Golden Lambikstoemper election, but this year we only have one winner. After 20 years of efforts by the Streekproducten Centrum Halle we think it’s (more than) time to put them – and only them – in the spotlight. So we’ve thrown our principles and regulations for one time aside for this one and only winner of the Golden Lambikstoemper 2015 Award.

Who will be next years winner? You can choose!
How? By sending us your candidate for our next Golden Lambikstoemper Award via our website. And yes, you can do this right now

The Golden Lambikstoemper Award is an artful document including some poetry compiled by Leo Lintermans.
